Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan congratulated newly appointed British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper during a phone call on Monday, discussing bilateral relations, including trade, defense cooperation, and counterterrorism efforts between Türkiye and the United Kingdom.
According to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources, Minister Fidan congratulated Cooper on her appointment to the position during their telephone conversation.
The ministers discussed the visit schedule between Türkiye and the UK, while evaluating topics on the bilateral agenda, particularly trade, defense and counterterrorism cooperation.
The conversation also addressed efforts to establish peace between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the latest situation in the Middle East.
Cooper, 56, was appointed as the UK's new foreign secretary Friday as part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's first Cabinet reshuffle, replacing David Lammy, who became deputy prime minister and justice secretary.
The Labour Party politician has been a member of Parliament for Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley, previously Normanton, for 28 years since first being elected May 1, 1997.
Cooper previously served as chief secretary to the Treasury and secretary of state for Work and Pensions under former Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour government.
Before Labour's election victory last summer, Cooper served as shadow home secretary. She became home secretary July 5, 2024, before Friday's appointment as foreign secretary.
Cooper won a Kennedy scholarship to study at Harvard in 1991. When she first ran for Parliament in 1997, she was working as an economics columnist and lead writer at The Independent.
