Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Chief Ibrahim Kalin held a phone conversation with Hamas Deputy Political Bureau Chief Khalil al-Hayya on June 1 to discuss the latest developments in Gaza cease-fire negotiations.
The conversation focused on the current stage of ceasefire negotiations conducted within the framework of recent proposals conveyed to Hamas under the leadership of U.S. Special Representative Steve Witkoff.
During the call, officials addressed Türkiye's efforts with the international community to end the humanitarian crisis and destruction in Gaza while ensuring immediate passage of aid deliveries.
The conversation underscored Türkiye's solidarity with the Palestinian people, with discussions centered on urgent steps needed for prisoner exchanges, immediate authorization of humanitarian aid passage, and achieving a permanent cease-fire.
The phone discussion emphasized the importance of continuing negotiations mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. Both sides highlighted the significance of international pressure on Israel to end the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza.
The talks represent ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the crisis through multilateral channels, with Türkiye maintaining its active role in supporting Palestinian interests while engaging with various stakeholders in the region.
At least 49 Palestinians have been killed and over 300 others injured in Israeli attacks on civilians seeking humanitarian aid in Gaza since May 27.
Israel’s blockade of Gaza has created a man-made famine, according to the U.N. With border crossings effectively closed to humanitarian aid for over 90 days, Gaza’s 2.4 million residents have been plunged into hunger.
Rejecting international calls for a cease-fire, Israel has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing over 54,400 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
