Turkish journalist Alican Uludag detained over social media posts

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday that journalist Alican Uludag has been taken into custody in connection with his social media posts.

Uludag, the Ankara correspondent for Deutsche Welle (DW) Turkish, was detained on grounds related to content shared on his X account.

In a written statement, the prosecutor’s office said:

“An ex officio investigation has been launched by our Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against the individual named Alican Uludag regarding certain posts made via the X social media account with the username ‘@alicanuludag,’ on charges of ‘Publicly Insulting the President’ and ‘Publicly Disseminating Misleading Information.’ The suspect was apprehended and taken into custody in the province of Ankara. Instructions have been given for the individual to be presented before our Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on 20.02.2026. The investigation is being conducted meticulously. Respectfully announced to the public.”

Authorities said Uludag, who was detained in Ankara, will be transferred to Istanbul under custody.

He is expected to be brought before the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on Friday to give his statement.
