Prominent Turkish journalist Fatih Altayli detained in Istanbul

Prominent Turkish journalist Fatih Altayli was detained Saturday from his residence in the Sisli district of Istanbul over remarks made against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his personal YouTube channel, Turkish media reported.

Altayli was taken into custody on the instruction of the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office as part of an ex officio investigation. Security sources said the investigation was launched over alleged threats directed at the president.

Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office releases statement

In a statement released by the prosecutor’s office, authorities said, “An ex officio investigation was initiated against Fatih Altayli for the offense of Threatening the President of the Republic (TCK art. 310/2 via 106/1) due to his threatening remarks targeting our President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the social media channel ‘YouTube’ dated 20/06/2025, and the person in question was detained today in accordance with the instruction given to the Istanbul Security Directorate.”

Istanbul Provincial Security Directorate officers detained Altayli at his home in the Tesvikiye neighborhood of Sisli and transported him to the Vatan Street campus of the Security Directorate. He is reportedly expected to be referred to the prosecutor’s office within four days.

Altayli, a veteran columnist and former television presenter, is known for his critical commentary on Turkish politics and government policies.
