Justice Minister Akin Gurlek has addressed the ongoing debate over whether President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will run for office again in the upcoming elections.
Speaking at an event in the southern province of Adana, Gurlek stated, "An election will be held in 2028 to elect our President once again. A highly important responsibility falls upon our party organizations and companions in this regard. Hand in hand, we must ensure our President is re-elected to lead the Century of Türkiye."
Emphasizing that the "terror-free Türkiye" process, which entails the PKK terrorist group laying down its arms, must be clearly explained to the public, Gurlek argued that resolving the terrorism issue will bring stability and a surge in investments to the country.
After becoming prime minister following the 2002 elections, Recep Tayyip Erdogan served three terms in the role before being elected president in 2014.
Most recently, Erdogan secured victory in the 2023 elections with 52.18% of the vote.
Under normal circumstances, the next presidential election in Türkiye is scheduled for May 2028.
However, for Erdogan to legally run again, an "early election" must be called by Parliament. Consequently, whether the polls will be brought forward to 2027 remains a subject of active debate in Turkish politics.
While opposition parties are pushing for elections at the earliest possible date, signals from the ruling bloc suggest that the polls will likely take place in the first months of 2028, potentially in March or April.
