Turkish ship runs aground in Black Sea near Crimea, crew evacuated safely

A Turkish-owned cargo vessel ran aground in the Black Sea after drifting south of the Kerch Strait and taking on water, Türkiye’s Directorate General of Maritime Affairs said Tuesday.

In a written statement, the authority said the vessel HAPPY ARAS drifted in the Black Sea before running aground south of the Kerch Strait.

After grounding, the ship began taking on water, prompting emergency coordination by maritime authorities.

Crew evacuated under maritime rescue coordination

The Directorate General of Maritime Affairs said all 14 crew members aboard the ship were safely evacuated under the coordination of the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (AAKKM).

The crew included three Turkish nationals and 11 other crew members.

Officials said the entire crew disembarked safely and no injuries were reported.

“The health condition of the crew is good,” the statement said, adding that developments related to the incident are being closely monitored.

No further details were provided regarding the cause of the drifting or the condition of the vessel following the evacuation.
