STM, a leading company in Türkiye's naval defense industry, has unveiled its newly developed Multi-Role Support Ship (MRSS) for the first time at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA 2025) in Malaysia.

The MRSS platform, originally developed by STM engineers, stands out with its versatile capabilities for both military and humanitarian operations, according to a statement released by the company.

"MRSS will participate not only in military operations but also in multifaceted missions ranging from humanitarian aid to evacuation," said STM General Manager Ozgur Guleryuz.

"It was uniquely designed for Malaysia and will offer flexible solutions for modern naval operations."

Guleryuz noted that the new generation support ship can serve not only in combat zones but also in disaster areas, adding, "MRSS offers a cost-effective solution for long-term operations."

Technical specifications and capabilities

The multi-role support ship, measuring 153 meters in length with a displacement of 9,700 tons, features an impressive amphibious personnel capacity of 500.

The platform can transport 14 main battle tanks and 9 amphibious vehicles while allowing the simultaneous landing and takeoff of two 15-ton helicopters.

According to technical data released by STM, the MRSS has a range of 8,000 nautical miles and can remain at sea for 30 days.

The vessel is equipped with a 76mm bow gun, four 12.7mm remotely controlled stabilized weapon systems, and two chaff/IR decoy launchers. It is also supported by two Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM) and RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) platforms.

In a social media post on X, the Guleryuz stated, "As Türkiye's engineering power at sea, we introduced the Multi-Purpose Support Ship (MRSS), a reflection of our design capabilities, in Malaysia."

"The MRSS, which we designed specifically to take into account the operational needs of the Malaysian Navy, will be able to respond in a versatile way with its innovative design," he added.

Multi-mission functionality

The MRSS is designed to perform numerous military missions, including amphibious operations, logistical support at sea, flag showing, sea-based command and control, and reconnaissance activities.

Beyond its military capabilities, the ship can be utilized for non-combat military operations such as evacuation, medical support, humanitarian aid, helicopter operations, and search-and-rescue missions.

Modern medical support units on the ship allow it to function as a fully equipped hospital during crisis situations.

Export potential with next-generation engineering

STM aims to expand Türkiye's defense industry engineering capacity to new markets with the MRSS platform.

This original design process initiated with Malaysia is seen as the first step of a ship family planned to be expanded through exports to friendly and allied countries in the future.

Guleryuz reminded them that STM has previously built platforms for Portugal, Ukraine, Pakistan, and Malaysia, stating, "This ship is also a strong continuation of our cooperation within the LMS Batch-2 program we are conducting with Malaysia."

The Royal Malaysian Navy is expected to have a procurement need for a ship in the MRSS class in the coming years, and STM has developed this innovative and national design to meet this requirement.
