Türkiye, UK hold comprehensive defense consultations in London

Türkiye and the United Kingdom held comprehensive defense and security consultations in London on May 29-30, 2025, addressing NATO cooperation, regional conflicts, and bilateral strategic partnership enhancement, according to a Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MoD) statement.

Major General Ilkay Altındag, Director General for Defence and Security at Türkiye's Ministry of National Defence, led the Turkish delegation in meetings with senior officials from the U.K. Ministry of Defence, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and Cabinet Office.

The consultations were described as "rooted in the deep alliance and longstanding friendship between Türkiye and the United Kingdom."

They represented "a concrete manifestation of their shared commitment to contributing to peace, security, and stability at both regional and global levels."

High-level UK participation demonstrates strategic importance

The Turkish delegation met with multiple senior UK officials, highlighting the significance both countries place on the bilateral defense relationship.

NATO deterrence, Euro-Atlantic security focus

The parties reviewed their contributions to strengthening NATO's deterrence and defense posture within shared alliance responsibilities and exchanged views on recent Euro-Atlantic security developments.

Both countries reaffirmed support for Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, emphasizing "the necessity of a lasting, just solution based on international law."

The discussions confirmed a shared understanding on strengthening cooperation in multilateral platforms and institutionalizing bilateral engagements with technical-level follow-up processes.

Syria situation addressed comprehensively

Issues related to Syria's evolving situation received significant attention during the consultations, covering multiple aspects of the regional challenge:

  • Stability and governance: Support for the stability of Syria's new regime and related capacity-building efforts
  • Counterterrorism: Coordinated actions against the Daesh terrorist organization
  • Military integration: Implementation of a "one-army policy" to consolidate Syrian military forces

The discussions reflected both countries' interests in ensuring Syrian stability following recent political changes in the country.

Regional security cooperation expanded

  • Libya: Both sides highlighted the importance of supporting the United Nations-led political process as crucial for achieving security and political stability in the country.
  • Somalia: Positive views were exchanged regarding the continuation of joint efforts in capacity-building and training activities for local security institutions.

The consultations emphasized enhancing joint efforts to ensure sustainable security and stability across these regions through concrete projects and institutional mechanisms.

Bilateral partnership strengthening mechanisms

The meetings confirmed mutual determination to deepen existing cooperation through:

  • Institutional development: Strengthening cooperation in multilateral platforms and institutionalizing bilateral engagements
  • Coordination: Maintaining follow-up processes at the technical level for ongoing projects
  • Concrete implementation: Developing specific projects to advance shared security objectives

Both countries reiterated their determination to further strengthen their strategic partnership in the defense and security fields, building on their NATO alliance foundation.

The Turkish delegation included Türkiye's ambassador to the United Kingdom and the defense attaché, ensuring diplomatic and military coordination in the discussions.
