Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will host the 10th Türkiye-Azerbaijan-Georgia Trilateral Foreign Ministers Meeting in Istanbul on Monday, bringing together senior officials from the three countries to review existing cooperation and discuss future areas of joint work.

According to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Georgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili will attend the meeting.

The agenda will focus on three main topics: regional developments, foreign policy issues and cooperation in the South Caucasus; transportation, connectivity and strengthening regional transit networks; and energy security, trade and deepening economic cooperation.

Focus on connectivity, transit and regional cooperation

During the meeting, Fidan is expected to underline the growing strategic importance of the South Caucasus at a time of increasing geopolitical uncertainty, economic vulnerabilities and security challenges.

He is expected to describe the trilateral cooperation mechanism as an important and results-oriented platform that promotes stability and prosperity in the region.

Fidan will also emphasize that Türkiye's strong and multidimensional relations with Azerbaijan and Georgia contribute significantly to regional stability and economic integration.

The foreign minister is expected to note that changes in global supply chains, debates over energy security and shifting geoeconomic dynamics have increased the importance of the Middle Corridor as a connectivity route between Europe and Asia.

In this context, he will highlight strengthening regional transportation projects within the Middle Corridor, particularly the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway, developing logistics networks and expanding transportation opportunities as shared priorities for the three countries.

Energy security, peace and stability on agenda

Fidan is also expected to stress that strategic energy projects implemented by the three countries contribute not only to their own interests but also to the energy security of the wider region.

He is expected to emphasize the importance of further developing cooperation in existing energy and sustainable connectivity projects, as well as increasing coordination in these areas.

The minister is also expected to state that establishing lasting peace, stability and normalization in the South Caucasus is of strategic importance for strengthening regional prosperity.

Fidan will further note that the Russia-Ukraine war continues to pose threats to the South Caucasus, the Black Sea region and neighboring areas and will call for support for diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace as soon as possible.

Trilateral mechanism marks nearly 14 years

The Türkiye-Azerbaijan-Georgia Trilateral Foreign Ministers Meeting format was established to institutionalize political dialogue among the three countries and strengthen regional cooperation.

The first meeting was held in Trabzon on June 8, 2012, while the most recent gathering took place in Baku on March 15, 2024.

Meetings held within the trilateral mechanism address issues on the common agenda, including foreign policy and regional developments, transportation and connectivity, energy security, trade, economic relations and regional infrastructure projects.

Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Georgia are located along a strategic route connecting Europe and Asia.

In this framework, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway, the Middle Corridor, and projects aimed at strengthening regional logistics networks and strategic cooperation in the energy sector form the foundation of the partnership among the three countries.

Maintained without interruption for nearly 14 years, the trilateral mechanism is also regarded as a concrete reflection of the shared vision to promote stability, economic integration and regional prosperity in the South Caucasus.
