Türkiye has banned Israel-flagged and Israeli-owned vessels from entering its ports, while also prohibiting Turkish-flagged ships from sailing to Israel, Turkish media reported Thursday.

According to sources familiar with the matter cited by broadcaster NTV, the restrictions also cover Israel-related cargo at Turkish ports, including container transshipments.

Authorities require ship owners to sign declarations affirming that their operations are not linked to Israel and that they are not carrying cargo destined for Israel or military equipment.

According to a Turkish official speaking to Middle East Eye, Ankara has taken the mentioned moves as a part of 'punitive steps' over Israeli genocide in Gaza.

The step is also seen as Türkiye's commitment to the Hague Group pledge.

The Hague Group, a bloc of eight countries including Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Malaysia, and South Africa, was launched on 31 January this year with the stated goal of holding Israel accountable under international law.

Türkiye became the first country to formally endorse the commitments adopted at the summit on 16 July.
