Türkiye on Saturday condemned the deadly suicide bombing at a church in Damascus, calling it a “heinous attack” aimed at destabilizing Syria and disrupting social peace.
“This attack aims to undermine efforts to establish stability and security in Syria and to disrupt social peace and harmony,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a written statement..
The ministry expressed confidence that the Syrian people and government would remain united and continue their fight against terrorist organizations “seeking to create chaos in the country.”
“We extend our condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in today’s (22 June) heinous attack on a church in Damascus, and to the people of Syria,” the statement added. “We wish a speedy recovery to those injured.” It also pledged Türkiye’s continued support for Syria.
The explosion struck Mar Elias Church in the Dwel’a neighborhood of the Syrian capital during evening hours, killing at least 20 people and wounding 52 others, according to Syrian Civil Defense.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry said the suicide bombing was carried out by the Daesh terrorist group and condemned the attack as a “cowardly attempt” to sow fear and division..
Images from the scene showed extensive damage to the church interior, with shattered pews, bloodstains, and debris scattered across the floor. Security forces have launched an investigation into the attack.
