Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said Israel’s ground assault on Gaza City marks a new stage in what it called the Netanyahu government’s “genocide plans.”
“Israel’s launch of a ground offensive in Gaza City is a new phase of the Netanyahu government’s genocide plans,” the ministry said in a written statement.
The ministry warned that the offensive — targeting one of the last remaining shelters for more than 1 million Palestinians — will intensify massacres, force hundreds of thousands of people to flee once again, and deepen the humanitarian catastrophe.
“At a time when the international community is striving for a cease-fire agreement that would also secure a hostage-prisoner exchange and uninterrupted access for humanitarian aid, the launch of a ground offensive has once again revealed that Israel does not want a cease-fire,” the statement said.
It called on the international community, especially the U.N. Security Council, to fulfill its responsibilities to secure a cease-fire. “For this purpose, we will continue our cooperation with countries that respect international law,” the ministry added.
The Israeli army said it launched nighttime ground attacks aimed at occupying Gaza City in the northern Gaza Strip. Two divisions are involved, with a third expected to join in the coming days, according to the Israeli army.
An Israeli military official, who spoke to Anadolu on condition of anonymity, said the army late Monday launched “the next stage” of Operation Gideon Chariots 2, aimed at deepening maneuvers inside the city after weeks of air and artillery strikes.
Meanwhile Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking during a court hearing in his ongoing corruption trial, confirmed that heavy attacks on Gaza City had begun.
Gaza City endured one of its deadliest nights on Monday, with at least 35 people killed and dozens wounded or missing. Israeli forces also deployed explosive-laden robots to demolish homes, local officials said.
Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign has killed nearly 65,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, according to health authorities in Gaza. The bombardment has left the enclave devastated, with famine, disease, and widespread displacement compounding the crisis.
