Türkiye has eliminated additional financial obligations on various U.S.-origin products that were imposed in 2018, according to a presidential decree published in the country's Official Gazette.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed the decision to rescind the Cabinet decree that had imposed extra duties on select American goods since 2018. The measure was implemented under provisions of several Turkish laws, including Laws 1567, 474, 3283, 4458, 2976, and 4067.

The tariffs were originally introduced as retaliatory measures after the United States imposed additional duties on Turkish steel and aluminum imports in 2018. Türkiye responded within World Trade Organization (WTO) framework rules by implementing counter-measures on various American products.

WTO negotiations lead to positive outcome

The Turkish Trade Ministry explained that the additional financial obligations had remained in effect at certain rates despite periodic updates based on steps taken by both parties over the years. The dispute has been under evaluation through various WTO panels and negotiations between the two countries.

"Following positive negotiations with the U.S. and consultations within the framework of WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism reports, the additional financial obligations applied to imports of certain U.S.-origin products have been terminated," the Trade Ministry stated.

The products that were subject to additional tariffs included automobiles at 60%, ethyl alcohol and alcoholic beverages at 70%, cosmetic products at 30%, plastic goods at 30%, leaf tobacco at 30%, rice at 25%, nuts at 10%, and various paper products at rates between 10-25%.

Bilateral trade target remains at $100 billion

The ministry emphasized that this move aligns with Türkiye's goal of reaching $100 billion in bilateral trade volume with the United States. Officials indicated that work will continue to increase commercial relations in ways that benefit both parties, diversify trade while considering competitive conditions, and develop new areas of cooperation.

The Trade Ministry reaffirmed Türkiye's commitment to protecting the country's rights and interests within international law and trade rules, stating it will "resolutely continue policies aimed at effectively conducting trade diplomacy and negotiation processes."

The tariff removal comes amid broader diplomatic engagement between Türkiye and the U.S., with the decision representing a significant development in the strategic dialogue between the two NATO allies.
