Türkiye hit by 5.8 magnitude earthquake off Mugla's Marmaris coast

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Mediterranean Sea at 2:17 a.m. local time, affecting 69 people in Türkiye's Mugla province. Officials say a 14-year-old girl died after suffering a panic attack.

According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the earthquake's epicenter was located 10.43 kilometers (6.48 miles) from the Marmaris district in Mugla province at a depth of 67.91 kilometers.

Casualty and medical response after earthquake

Mugla Governor Idris Akbiyik reported that 69 citizens were affected by the earthquake. "10 of our citizens by ambulance and 45 of our citizens on foot, a total of 55 of our citizens applied to hospitals. 14 of our citizens refused to be transferred to the hospital and were treated on site," Akbiyik said.

The governor confirmed that one patient was hospitalized, 46 patients continue to undergo examinations and treatment in emergency services, and eight patients were discharged.

"Our 14-year-old child in Fethiye district, who was brought to the hospital after having a panic attack during the earthquake, could not be saved despite all interventions," Akbiyik stated.

Victim identified by interior minister

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya identified the victim as 14-year-old Afranur Gunlu. "During the earthquake, our 14-year-old daughter named Afranur Gunlu was taken to the hospital due to a panic attack in Fethiye, but unfortunately, she lost her life despite all interventions," Yerlikaya said in a social media post.

Yerlikaya reported that 69 citizens were injured in Mugla and its districts due to panic and jumping from heights, with 14 receiving treatment at the scene.

"Eight people were treated as outpatients and discharged. The examinations and treatments of 46 of our citizens continue in the emergency service," Yerlikaya said.

No structural damage reported after earthquake

Governor Akbiyik confirmed no negative impact on the city's energy supply and infrastructure, natural gas supply, drinking water and sewage infrastructure that would affect general life. He stated there was no collapse in residential buildings throughout the city.

Environment, Urban Planning and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum said damage assessment teams continued field scanning work. "So far, no collapse has been detected," Kurum stated on social media.

"As of now, there is no negative situation, but our teams have started field scanning work," Kurum said in an earlier statement.

Earthquake felt in multiple provinces

The earthquake was felt in Mugla and surrounding provinces, including Aydin, Denizli, Manisa, and Izmir, according to AFAD.

AFAD reported: "After the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred at 02:17 off Muğla Marmaris in the Mediterranean Sea, which was felt in our provinces of Mugla, Aydin, Denizli, Manisa and Izmir, there is no negative situation as of now. Field scanning work continues."

Interior Minister Yerlikaya lastly expressed condolences: "I wish Allah's mercy for our child Afranur, who lost her life, and my condolences to her relatives. I offer my get well soon wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake. May God protect our country and nation from disasters."

Environment Minister Murat Kurum also offered condolences: "I wish Allah's mercy for our 14-year-old child, Afranur Gunlu, who lost her life due to a panic attack during the earthquake in Fethiye, patience and condolences to her family. I also wish urgent healing to our citizens who were injured as a result of panic and jumping from heights."
