Türkiye’s Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmus and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed condolences on Monday following a powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 800 people and injuring more than 2,500.

Kurtulmus wrote on social media, “I pray for mercy on those who lost their lives in the earthquake disaster in Afghanistan and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. Condolences to the brotherly people of Afghanistan.”

The Turkish Foreign Ministry also issued a statement: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life in the earthquake that struck near the city of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, last night (Aug. 31). We wish Allah's mercy upon those who lost their lives and extend our condolences to the people of Afghanistan.”

The magnitude 6.0 quake struck Kunar province late Sunday, causing widespread destruction, landslides, and blocked roads, with rescue teams deploying helicopters to reach affected areas.

Neighboring Nangarhar province reported additional casualties. Local authorities and residents joined rescue efforts as teams from the central government and surrounding provinces rushed to the region.

Authorities warned that the toll could rise as search operations continue in remote villages. Officials also reported at least two aftershocks, including one measuring 5.2 magnitude.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the earthquake occurred 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad at a depth of 8 kilometers.
