Türkiye's domestically produced ATMACA anti-ship missile was successfully fired for the first time from a naval platform during the ongoing Seawolf-II/2025 (DENIZKURDU-II 2025) exercise, Turkish defense officials announced on Saturday, May 10.

The Ministry of National Defense (MoD) shared footage of the successful launch on its social media accounts, stating, "Our Naval Forces have achieved another first in the Blue Homeland.

The ATMACA guided missile was fired for the first time since being added to our naval forces' inventory as part of the DENIZKURDU-II 2025 Exercise. Fired from TCG Kinaliada in the Sinop firing range, ATMACA successfully hit and destroyed its target with pinpoint accuracy."

ATMACA missile destroys decommissioned vessel

The live-fire test was conducted off the coast of Sinop and targeted the decommissioned fast attack craft ex-TCG Marti, marking the missile's first operational use in a naval exercise since being officially added to the Turkish Navy's inventory.

"The Turkish Navy and Turkish engineers have written a new history in the Blue Homeland. The National Anti-Ship Missile ATMACA has destroyed the M/G MARTI," the ministry stated in its announcement.

Following the impact of the ATMACA missile with its live warhead, the target vessel was observed to have sustained severe damage, demonstrating the effectiveness of Türkiye's first domestically developed anti-ship missile.

Technical specifications and development history

The ATMACA Guided Missile Project was initiated in 2009 to meet the Turkish Naval Forces' anti-ship missile needs through domestic capabilities. Developed by Turkish defense contractor Roketsan, the ATMACA (meaning "Hawk" in Turkish) is an all-weather, long-range, precision-guided anti-ship cruise missile with a range exceeding 220 kilometers.

The missile employs an active radar seeker head and is powered by the KTJ-3200 turbojet engine, Türkiye's first indigenous missile propulsion system, produced by Kale Arge.

Since its initial ship-launched test in November 2019 from the MILGEM TCG Kinaliada (F-514) Corvette, the missile has undergone extensive trials, including successful tests against both stationary targets and actual vessels.

One of the ATMACA's key tactical advantages is its low radar cross-section and "Super Sea Skimming" capability, allowing it to fly very close to the water surface.

This feature makes the missile detectable by target platforms only at distances of 18-20 kilometers (11.1 miles to 12.4 miles), giving ship crews minimal reaction time, as noted in the defense ministry's statement.

International interest, export potential

The successful demonstration comes as Türkiye has reportedly signed contracts to export the ATMACA missile system to countries including Indonesia and Malaysia, further establishing the country's growing defense industry presence in international markets.

Roketsan CEO Murat Ikinci commented on the successful test, "ATMACA is the striking power of our sailors! Our ATMACA fired from TCG Kinaliada during the DENIZKURDU-II 2025 exercise hit its target with pinpoint accuracy.

Our advanced technology products, developed with national and original capabilities, continue to serve our Armed Forces with high performance."

Seawolf-II/2025 exercise details

The Seawolf-II/2025 exercise, running from May 6 to 16, is one of the Turkish Naval Forces' largest annual drills. It spans multiple strategic waters, including the Black Sea, Marmara Sea, Aegean Sea, and eastern Mediterranean—regions of heightened geopolitical significance.

The comprehensive exercise involves 120 ships, 85 aircraft, unmanned maritime vehicles, submarines, special forces, and coastal units, with participation from the Turkish Army, Air Force, Gendarmerie, and Coast Guard.
