Türkiye summoned Ukraine’s ambassador to Ankara to the Foreign Ministry after a Turkish-operated ship was struck in the Black Sea and another vessel sent to tow it was also targeted, Turkish diplomatic sources said.
Ukraine’s Ambassador to Ankara Nariman Dzhelialov was summoned after the Turkish-operated vessel Lider Bordo Mavi was struck off Tuapse on Aug. 26.
The move came after the Lider Kocatepe, which was sent to tow the vessel, was also targeted on Aug. 27.
Following the incidents, Ukraine's ambassador to Ankara was summoned to the ministry, where Türkiye conveyed its reaction to the attacks.
During the meeting, Turkish officials stressed the necessity of ensuring the safety of life, property, navigation and the environment in the Black Sea and issued the necessary warnings, the sources said.
This comes amid a broader pattern of attacks on commercial vessels navigating the Black Sea since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, a conflict that has repeatedly disrupted civilian shipping traffic in the region and drawn in vessels and crews from multiple countries, including Türkiye.
Turkish officials have in recent months voiced repeated concern over the toll on Turkish-flagged and Turkish-owned vessels operating in the sea and have called on both Moscow and Kyiv to take steps to protect civilian shipping lanes.
