Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said Monday that flights to Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan operated by Turkish Airlines, AJet, Pegasus and SunExpress have been canceled until March 6 due to ongoing risks in the region.

All flights to Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have also been canceled until March 3, he added.

In a written statement on the status of regional airspace and Turkish carriers following U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran and Iran’s retaliatory actions, Uraloglu said authorities are monitoring developments in real time and that all necessary measures have been taken.

“Iran, Israel, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and the southern part of Syria remain subject to airspace closure NOTAMs. Civil flights are continuing in Oman, parts of Saudi Arabia and Lebanon,” Uraloglu said.

He said traffic management measures were implemented in the United Arab Emirates under emergency procedures and that, as of Monday, Emirates and Etihad Airways flights are expected to resume.

Status of Turkish carriers

Providing details on Turkish carriers, Uraloglu said one Turkish Airlines aircraft is waiting at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport and that it is the only THY aircraft affected by the situation.

He added that one Pegasus Airlines aircraft is also at the same airport, while AJet has no aircraft waiting in Iran, Syria, Iraq or other restricted areas.

Uraloglu also said an aircraft leased by Tailwind Airlines to an Iraq-based company is currently in Iraq.

Emphasizing that carriers are planning routes to avoid restricted airspace, Uraloglu said:

“Due to ongoing risks in the region, flights to Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan by Turkish Airlines, AJet, Pegasus and SunExpress have been canceled until March 6. In addition, Pegasus Airlines has decided not to operate flights to Iran until March 12.

All planned flights to Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE have also been canceled until March 3.

Decisions are taken in light of daily assessments, and if there is no improvement in current conditions, cancellations may continue on a daily basis. Today, flights can be operated to Riyadh, Jeddah and Medina in Saudi Arabia, as well as to Oman.”
