Türkiye taking historic steps to secure its future amid global shifts: Erdogan

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that Türkiye is taking historic steps to safeguard the nation's future as he prepared to chair the annual Supreme Military Council meeting.

"Our struggle to make Türkiye the leading nation in its region within the reshaped global order continues, despite the traps set against us and the attacks from both within and beyond our borders," Erdogan said in a message he read at the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Türkiye.

Supreme Military Council convenes

The Supreme Military Council meeting began at 12:10 p.m. local time at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

Council members attending included Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, National Education Minister Yusuf Tekin and Defense Minister Yasar Guler.

Military leadership participating in the meeting included Chief of General Staff General Metin Gurak, Land Forces Commander General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu, Naval Forces Commander Admiral Ercument Tatlioglu and Air Forces Commander General Ziya Cemal Kadioglu.

President outlines national Vision

During his ceremonial visit to Ataturk's mausoleum before the council meeting, Erdogan outlined the government's comprehensive approach to national development.

"We are taking historic steps to safeguard our nation's future, from security to democracy, from the economy to technology, from the defense industry to foreign policy," he said.

The president expressed optimism about the council's 2025 meeting, stating: "We believe that the 2025 meeting of our council will be a new milestone on the path toward the vision of the Century of Türkiye."

Erdogan also paid tribute to Ataturk and "all the lives sacrificed for our future" during the ceremonial visit, which included other council members.
