Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates signed seven bilateral agreements Wednesday in Ankara, marking a significant advancement in strategic cooperation between the two nations.
The agreements were signed in the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who was welcomed with an official ceremony at the presidential complex in the Turkish capital Ankara.
The visit included the first meeting of the Türkiye-UAE High-Level Strategic Council, established in 2023, and a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders.
“During my 2023 visit to Abu Dhabi, we laid the foundation of our strategic partnership with my esteemed brother Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed,” Erdogan said during a joint press event. “Thankfully, this partnership has begun to bear fruit across nearly every sector — from trade and infrastructure to defense, energy, technology, and transportation.”
Erdogan noted the rapid expansion in bilateral trade, saying, “Only a few years ago, we were wondering whether a $10 billion trade volume was within reach. This year, the goal is to exceed $20 billion. With decisive steps from both sides, I’m confident we’ll meet our medium-term target of $40 billion.”
The Turkish leader also said he and Sheikh Mohammed discussed regional challenges, including the ongoing crisis in Gaza, in addition to strengthening bilateral ties.
Among the agreements signed was a memorandum of understanding on investment cooperation in tourism and hospitality, signed by Ahmet Burak Daglioglu, head of the Investment Office of the Presidency of Türkiye, and UAE Investment Minister Mohamed Hassan Al Suwaidi.
Additional MoUs focused on investment in pharmaceuticals, industrial manufacturing, and agriculture and food sectors.
A memorandum on establishing a joint consular committee was signed by Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yılmaz and UAE State Minister Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar.
Turkish National Defense Minister Yasar Guler and UAE State Minister for Defense Affairs Mohammed Mubarak Al Mazrouei signed an agreement on mutual protection of classified information.
Another memorandum, focusing on cooperation in polar research, was signed by Türkiye’s Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir and UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber.
