Türkiye and the United States held a new round of Syria Working Group talks in Washington on May 20, reaffirming their commitment to enhanced cooperation on ensuring stability and security in Syria, in line with directives from U.S. President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In a joint statement released after the meeting, both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining Syria’s territorial integrity.
“The United States and Türkiye recognize the importance of maintaining the territorial integrity of Syria. A stable and united Syria, which does not offer a safe haven for terrorist organizations, will support regional security and prosperity,” the statement said.
The delegations were led by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Nuh Yilmaz. U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye Thomas Barrack Jr. and Turkish Ambassador to the United States Sedat Onal also participated in the discussions.
The meeting came at a crucial time, following a series of diplomatic engagements between Washington and Damascus, including President Trump’s recent announcement of lifting U.S. sanctions on Syria.
The statement highlighted that both countries “share a vision for Syria that is stable and at peace with itself and its neighborhood.”
It added that the delegations discussed shared priorities, including implementing sanctions relief in line with Trump’s directive and strengthening joint efforts to combat terrorism “in all its forms and manifestations.”
The sides also underscored their mutual goal of creating conditions that would allow millions of displaced Syrians to return to their homeland.
