Türkiye reiterated its call for fair representation of Turkmen communities in Iraq, particularly in the province, amid recent developments in the Altunkopru district, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Oncu Keceli said in a statement on X.

Keceli stressed that the fair representation of Turkmen communities in Iraq's political and administrative structures remains a fundamental expectation for Türkiye. “This issue carries particular importance in Kirkuk, especially in appointments and assignments within public institutions, including the Provincial Council,” he said. .

The statement came after a non-Turkmen was appointed to lead the Altunkopru Municipality—a district known for its high concentration of Turkmen population. The decision has caused “justified discontent and disappointment” among the Turkmen community, Keceli noted.

“Kirkuk, with its ethnic and religious diversity, represents a microcosm of Iraq. The peace and stability of Kirkuk are crucial for the peace and stability of the entire country,” he added.

Türkiye is closely and carefully monitoring developments in Kirkuk, Keceli said.
