Türkiye's domestically developed Altay main battle tank (MBT) will see its first delivery on Oct. 28 during the official opening ceremony of the BMC Ankara Tank and New Generation Armored Vehicles Production Facility.
The facility in Kahramankazan will mark a milestone in the Altay Tank Project, designed to meet the Turkish Armed Forces' (TAF) main battle tank needs through domestic capabilities.
Serial production of the Altay tanks has begun with imported power units, though production will transition to the domestic BATU Power Group.
The project will deliver 250 tanks to the Land Forces Command, comprising 85 T1 configuration units and 165 T2 configuration units.
The "New Altay" tank emerged with superior capabilities after localization efforts, with additional features added to prototypes due to export license restrictions.
Enhanced systems include an active protection system, a new power unit, an improved armor system, an upgraded fire control system, and a renewed vehicle control system.
Localized components include speed reducers, gunner secondary sight systems, tracks, turret ring gears, fuel and hydraulic pumps, mobile camouflage nets, periscopes and rotors.
The next-generation main battle tank was redesigned and upgraded to the Altay T1 configuration based on recent combat experiences in the region and future requirements of the Turkish Armed Forces.
Altay T1 features comprehensive armor protection, comprising passive, reactive, and active components designed to withstand all battlefield threats.
The tank provides effective passive armor protection against the most powerful tank threats and advanced guided anti-tank missiles.
Protection systems include new-generation reactive armor and cage armor against rocket-propelled grenade threats, plus a 360-degree Active Protection System against all anti-tank rockets and guided missiles.
Altay T1 includes explosion-delaying measures in hull ammunition areas and an expanded turret rear compartment.
The tank will deliver superior firepower through high-tech weapon systems and advanced fire control systems, achieving maximum hit rates.
Crew protection will be ensured through next-generation hybrid protection systems that optimize maneuverability, agility and survivability.
BMC delivered the Altay main battle tank with renewed and localized systems, including the power unit, to the Turkish Armed Forces in 2023 for serial production testing. Serial production will continue with the T2 configuration, which will provide additional capabilities.
