Türkiye's aviation and defense firm, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with BAE Systems, a leading US-based defense contractor.

The strategic agreement, announced on Thursday, solidifies a significant step in advancing collaboration between the two companies in the field of uncrewed air systems (UAS), or drones, which are increasingly integral to modern defense and security operations, according to the companies.

The MoU outlines the cooperation between TAI and BAE Systems in the development, manufacturing, and deployment of advanced unmanned aerial systems, a rapidly growing segment within the global defense industry. According to TAI’s official statement, the collaboration will target joint opportunities in the area of future UAS technologies, contributing to the advancement of both companies' capabilities in unmanned systems.

The partnership will also provide TAI with an opportunity to tap into new global markets and strengthen its position as a leader in unmanned aerial system production. The increasing demand for advanced unmanned systems, driven by global security concerns and technological advancements, has made UAS a critical area for innovation in defense industries worldwide.

The collaboration with BAE Systems builds on TAI’s existing partnerships, including a recent agreement with Airbus aimed at expanding defense cooperation.

As a key player in Türkiye’s growing defense sector, TAI is recognized for producing the country’s first indigenous fighter jet, the KAAN, along with its jet trainer Hurjet, indigenous helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Türkiye has rapidly established itself as one of the leading suppliers of unmanned aerial systems worldwide, with its UAVs playing a vital role in defense operations both domestically and internationally.

BAE Systems, headquartered in the United States, is one of the largest defense contractors in the world, known for its advanced military technologies and wide-ranging defense capabilities. The company has been involved in the development of numerous cutting-edge defense systems, including unmanned platforms and aerospace technologies.
