President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Sept. 25 to discuss defense deals, trade relations and regional conflicts, including the Ukraine crisis.
The meeting will cover Boeing aircraft purchases, F-16 fighter jet agreements and the continuation of F-35 negotiations, which Trump said he expects "to conclude positively," according to his post on Truth Social.
While the Ukraine conflict will be addressed during the talks, no concrete initiatives have been prepared for the meeting, a Turkish diplomatic source told Russian media outlet RIA Novosti on Monday.
"The Ukrainian issue will certainly be touched upon, however at this moment there is no information about specific initiatives in this direction," the source said.
Erdogan expressed optimism about the meeting's potential impact on regional stability in a post on social media.
"In our meeting at the White House with my esteemed counterpart and friend, U.S. President Donald Trump, we will discuss a range of issues with our ally, the U.S., with whom we have a comprehensive strategic relationship, including trade, investment and the defense industry," Erdogan stated.
The Turkish president added his belief that the talks "will contribute to ending wars and conflicts in our region within the framework of our shared vision for global peace, and further strengthen cooperation between our countries."
Trump highlighted several military deals under negotiation between the two NATO allies, emphasizing the economic and strategic importance of the partnerships.
"We are working on many trade and military deals with the president, including the large-scale purchase of Boeing aircraft, a major F-16 Deal, and a continuation of the F-35 talks," Trump wrote.
Trump also underscored the personal relationship between the two leaders as a foundation for productive negotiations. "President Erdogan and I have always had a very good relationship. I look forward to seeing him on the 25th!" Trump added in his announcement.
