President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed plans for detailed discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump following his address at the United Nations Climate Summit, where he also announced Türkiye's ambitious emissions reduction targets.
Speaking outside the Turkish House in New York after the climate gathering, Erdogan said the meetings had proceeded positively. "We will proceed to Washington from here. Tomorrow we will have a detailed meeting with Trump," he stated.
At the UN Climate Summit held at the organization's headquarters, Erdogan outlined Türkiye's environmental strategy for the coming decade. "We aim to achieve a 466 million ton emission reduction by 2035 through the policies we will implement in the economy and reduce our emissions to 643 million tons," the Turkish president declared.
The announcement positions Türkiye as a significant participant in global climate efforts, with the proposed reduction representing a substantial shift in the country's environmental policy framework.
Erdogan highlighted Türkiye's progress in sustainable energy development during his climate address. "As of this year, we have raised the share of renewable energy to over 60 percent of our total installed capacity," he announced, underscoring the country's commitment to clean energy infrastructure.
Erdogan emphasized ongoing efforts to modernize the country's transportation systems with environmental considerations. "We are rapidly strengthening infrastructure, especially for electric vehicles, and giving priority to railway investments," Erdogan said, indicating a comprehensive approach to reducing carbon emissions across multiple sectors.
Following his UN appearances, Erdogan expressed satisfaction with the diplomatic exchanges in New York before confirming his Washington agenda. The scheduled meeting with Trump represents a continuation of high-level diplomatic engagement between Türkiye and the United States.
