Adverse weather conditions and reduced visibility in Istanbul disrupted air traffic on Sunday, forcing many planes that could not land at Sabiha Gokcen Airport to divert to Istanbul Airport, while airlines canceled dozens of flights.

A Jet announced that 51 flights scheduled for Sunday, March 29, were canceled due to adverse weather conditions. Pegasus Airlines also announced that 76 flights departing from and arriving at Sabiha Gokcen Airport were mutually canceled due to adverse weather conditions in Istanbul.

Rainfall affecting the city and intensifying in some areas reduced visibility and negatively affected flight operations.

Aircraft attempting to land at Sabiha Gokcen Airport were forced to circle in the air for extended periods, and some planes were diverted to nearby airports due to fuel limitations. Many aircraft belonging to Pegasus and AJet were redirected to Istanbul Airport.

Flight restrictions in place for two days

In a statement from Sabiha Gokcen Airport Authority HEAS, officials said a flight restriction decision was taken for Sunday and Monday due to weather conditions.

“According to the latest evaluations of the General Directorate of Meteorology, flight cancellations will be made on March 29 and March 30 due to adverse meteorological conditions around Sabiha Gokcen Airport. Our passengers are kindly requested to follow up-to-date information regarding their flights through the official websites and call centers of the relevant airline companies,” the statement said.

Airlines announce cancellations and diversions

A Jet Press Advisor, Mehmet Yesilkaya, said in a statement on social media that 51 flights scheduled for Sunday, March 29, were canceled due to adverse weather.

“Based on the decision of the Meteorological Emergency Committee to restrict flights, 51 of our flights departing from and arriving at Sabiha Gokcen Airport on Sunday, March 29, have been canceled. 11 of our flights have also been diverted to other airports. If adverse weather conditions continue, new cancellations and diversions may occur. We continue our operations without compromising flight safety. Necessary information is provided to our passengers through our communication channels,” Yesilkaya said.

Meanwhile, Pegasus Airlines said 76 flights departing from and arriving at Sabiha Gokcen Airport were mutually canceled due to adverse weather conditions in Istanbul.

In a statement, the company said disruptions occurred in scheduled flights in line with the flight restriction decision taken by the Meteorological Emergency Committee (MADKOM).

The statement added that further cancellations and diversions may occur if adverse weather continues, and passengers should follow the latest announcements before their flights.
