Two Turkish citizens were killed and one Turkish citizen was injured in an armed attack in Hamburg, Germany, with police and prosecutors examining whether the incident may be linked to organized crime groups.
The shooting took place Sept. 1 at a business complex on Lagerstrasse Street, across from the Hamburg International Exhibition Center in the St. Pauli district.
After people in the area heard successive gunshots and reported the incident, large numbers of police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene.
Police found a 47-year-old man in the parking lot, seriously wounded by gunfire. Despite medical intervention, he died at the scene.
During a search of the building, a second man, aged 33, was found dead after being shot in the head.
German media claimed that a weapon was found near or in the hand of the second man, but the Hamburg Prosecutor’s Office has not officially confirmed that information.
Authorities said the two people killed were Turkish citizens.
A 48-year-old Turkish citizen was also injured in the incident after a bullet grazed his head.
The injured man reportedly left the scene on his own and went to Hamburg University Hospital UKE. His life was not in danger.
German media reported that a partly masked group of eight to 10 people entered the business complex before the attack and that gunshots were heard shortly afterward.
Police seized a weapon, ammunition and several vehicles at the scene for examination.
The investigation is being conducted by the Hamburg Homicide Squad (LKA 41) and the Organized Crime Unit, together with the Hamburg Prosecutor’s Office.
The business complex at Lagerstrasse 11, where the attack took place, also houses the boxing club of former professional boxer and Universum Boxing owner Ismail Ozen.
In a statement issued through his lawyer, Ozen said the incident was not connected to him, that the attack did not take place in areas belonging to his companies and that he did not know the people who lost their lives.
A hand grenade had also been thrown at the same business complex on the night of June 26.
In July, police removed a sign containing insults targeting Ozen near Elbbrucken.
Police have not announced any evidence linking those incidents to the latest attack.
The Hamburg Prosecutor’s Office said there were indications that the background of the incident involved “a dispute within a criminal organization.”
Claims that the attack was a “mafia reckoning” have not yet been officially confirmed.
Police efforts to capture the attacker or attackers are continuing.
