The speaker of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Parliament, Ziya Ozturkler, criticized a new cooperation agreement signed between the Greek Cypriot administration, Israel and Greece, saying that solutions cannot be achieved “under the shadow of weapons.”
Speaking on a television program, Ozturkler reacted to the agreement, questioning its intent and warning against escalating militarization in the region.
“Who is this armament against, and what is it preparing for?” he said. “There can be no solution under the shadow of weapons.”
Ozturkler said the recent steps taken by the Greek Cypriot administration, alongside growing military cooperation in the region, have increased tensions.
He also referred to attempts by Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides to use the European Union presidency as leverage against Türkiye.
He said attempts to shape the negotiation process through media statements during ongoing talks undermine efforts to find a solution.
“Instead of selling illusions, state your real intentions directly to your counterparts,” Ozturkler said. “Diplomacy belongs at the table, not in front of the media.”
Addressing claims that Turkish troops could withdraw from the island, Ozturkler said such expectations do not reflect realities on the ground, given security balances, international agreements and regional threats.
He said the presence of Turkish forces on the island is a guarantee of peace and stability, stressing that it is not a bargaining chip but an indispensable factor for the security of the Turkish Cypriot people.
Ozturkler also spoke on the occasion of Martyrs’ Week, commemorated between Dec. 21 and 25, honoring those who fought for freedom and existence in Cyprus.
He said their sacrifices continue to guide the Turkish Cypriot community.
He added that recent investments aimed at economic development are continuing across various sectors and are being planned in line with the needs of society.
