Belgium's defence minister Theo Francken has sent letters to 149,000 17-year-olds across the country, encouraging them to consider voluntary military service. The campaign, which was approved in September, aims to engage young people in national defence and provide them with practical, educational experiences.

Sharing the news on social media platform X, Francken wrote that the letters had been posted and added:

“All 17-year-olds in the country are encouraged to learn about the Ministry of Defence and, in particular, to volunteer for military service. Let’s get started!

The initiative has drawn criticism from opposition parties. Some lawmakers and advocacy groups have raised concerns that targeting teenagers could be a step toward militarizing society.

Francken defended the programme, emphasizing that it is voluntary and aims to provide young people with valuable life and learning experiences.
