Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on Sunday called for the bombing of Beirut’s southern Dahiyeh district after the Israeli military reported that two drones had been launched from Lebanon toward military positions in northern Israel.
Ben-Gvir, a far-right member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, said on X that he would demand strikes on Dahiyeh during a meeting with Netanyahu later Sunday.
“Fire for every violation. Dahiyeh must shake for every drone,” Ben-Gvir said.
The Israeli military said the drone attack from Lebanon targeted military sites in northern Israel.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, another far-right member of the government, also called for buildings in Dahiyeh to be destroyed following the drone attack.
Both ministers demanded military action against the Beirut district in response to the reported launches from Lebanon.
The statements came as Israel continued attacks on Lebanon despite several ceasefire announcements and U.S.-mediated negotiations.
Israel launched an intensive air campaign against Lebanon on March 2 and occupied several towns in the country’s south.
The Lebanese government said more than 1 million people had been displaced during the attacks.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said in its latest figures that Israeli attacks since March 2 had killed 3,756 people.
Israeli forces have continued their operations despite ceasefire arrangements announced during the conflict.
A 10-day temporary ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel took effect on April 17.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced April 24 that the truce had been extended for another three weeks.
Following a third round of U.S.-mediated talks between Lebanon and Israel on May 14 and 15, the parties agreed to extend the ceasefire for 45 days from May 17.
The U.S. State Department said June 3, after a fourth round of talks in Washington, that Israel and Lebanon had agreed on a comprehensive ceasefire conditional on Hezbollah completely ending its attacks and withdrawing all its forces from south of the Litani River.
Hezbollah rejected the conditional ceasefire.
Israeli forces have continued attacking Lebanon despite the announced agreements.
