The Bulgarian government has approved a draft agreement with Türkiye to establish a new customs and border crossing next to the existing Kapitan Andreevo–Kapikule gate, aiming to address ongoing border transit issues.
In a written statement following a regular cabinet meeting, the Bulgarian government said the Council of Ministers approved a draft agreement between Bulgaria and Türkiye to resolve problems related to border crossings and to open a new crossing point named “Kapitan Andreevo–Kapikule–North.”
Under the draft agreement, a joint commission made up of authorized representatives from both countries will be established to determine the parameters of the new crossing, which will be located north of the existing Kapitan Andreevo–Kapikule checkpoint.
The joint commission is expected to examine a range of technical and operational issues, including the basic technical characteristics of road connections, route locations, border intersection points, the number of border crossing lanes, and the location and technical specifications of the new control and crossing facilities.
The commission will also address the operating regime, infrastructure, types of cargo and passengers, and various aspects related to the construction of the new border crossing.
Kapitan Andreevo–Kapikule is considered one of the world’s busiest border crossings and is widely described as Europe’s largest land border gate linking the European Union with Asia.
