Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said his country could play a significant role in Lebanon's reconstruction and economic development during talks with visiting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Monday.

Speaking at a joint press conference following bilateral meetings in Sofia, Radev outlined areas where the two nations could deepen cooperation.

"We are ready to deepen relations with Aoun in economic relations, investments, trade, military, agriculture and especially education and culture," Radev said.

Middle East tensions dominate bilateral discussions

The Bulgarian leader said discussions also addressed escalating tensions in the Middle East, describing Lebanon as facing a historic choice as the region undergoes profound changes.

"The tension in the Middle East region and the deep changes that have begun in the regional security architecture leave our friend Lebanon facing a historic choice for the return of political and economic stability," Radev said. "Today's talks also show that as leaders of the two countries, we are ready to contribute to deepening our relations, our partnership, our cooperation and our efforts to establish peace and stability in this region that is so important for the whole world."

Sofia-Beirut air route reopening proposed to boost ties

Radev called for the reopening of the Sofia-Beirut air route, which he noted had continued even during Lebanon's difficult civil war years, saying it would be an important step in strengthening ties between the two nations and promoting connections between citizens and the business community.

Lebanese President Aoun emphasized the historic significance of his Sofia visit and referenced the 60-year relationship between the two countries.

Both leaders pointed to the need to increase bilateral trade volume, which currently stands at 175 million euros.
