The death toll from a fire earlier this month at a nursing home in northeastern Bosnia rose to 15 on Friday, after two more victims succumbed to their injuries in hospital, officials said.
The blaze broke out on the evening of Nov. 4 on the seventh floor of the facility in the city of Tuzla, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Sarajevo. Most of the residents were elderly, sick and bedridden.
Five people remain hospitalized at the Tuzla University Clinical Centre, two of them in serious condition, hospital officials said.
Eleven residents died on the night of the fire, most from smoke inhalation, according to autopsy reports. Additional victims later died in hospital.
Prosecutors said Friday that fire experts determined the blaze was caused by a faulty power cable attached to a radio in one of the resident’s rooms, leading to a short circuit.
More than 30 people, including police officers and firefighters, were injured during the evacuation and rescue efforts.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing to determine who may be held responsible for the deadly accident.
