Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty announced on Wednesday that Egypt has commenced the training of 5,000 Palestinian police officers, who are set to be deployed to assist in the security administration of the Gaza Strip.

Speaking to the Egyptian DMC TV channel, Aaty emphasized the importance of having a Palestinian police presence in Gaza after Israel's war comes to an end.

“Clear lists have been finalized for the Palestinian police personnel currently undergoing training in Egyptian camps, selected by Egypt in coordination with Jordanian and Palestinian authorities, for deployment in Gaza, due to the existing security vacuum in the Gaza Strip,” Aaty stated.

The Egyptian minister noted that the deployment of police personnel and the issue of Gaza’s reconstruction would fall under the supervision of the Palestinian prime minister.

When questioned about who would assume control of the Gaza Strip the day following the war in Gaza, he emphasized that “the Palestinian Authority will oversee the administration of the Strip through a designated committee to maintain territorial unity between the two parts of the Palestinian state.”

Conference for reconstruction

Aaty stated that once a cease-fire is achieved in the Gaza Strip, Egypt will host the Cairo International Conference for the Reconstruction of Gaza, with the Palestinian Prime Minister attending alongside a senior delegation.

He stated that “several workshops will be held during the conference, including on policing arrangements, development and reconstruction,” adding that the Palestinian Authority “is capable of managing Gaza through its various responsibilities.”

Regarding the governance of the Strip, Abdel Aaty confirmed that an understanding has been reached with all relevant parties to appoint 15 prominent figures—all technocrats, including engineers and doctors, and not affiliated with any political factions—to administer Gaza for six months.

“The six-month timeframe is intended to allow for the rehabilitation of the Palestinian Authority in preparation for its full deployment and assumption of control over the Strip,” he explained.

On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Gaza would be run by a “non-Israeli civilian administration” after the occupation of Gaza City.

He claimed that the planned administration will be run by third parties, “not Hamas or the Palestinian Authority,” without giving further details.
