Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said Thursday that Cairo is pushing for the formation of a Palestinian technocratic committee to facilitate the Palestinian Authority’s return to Gaza, as part of wider diplomatic efforts to support a ceasefire and expand humanitarian access to the enclave.
The remarks came during a phone call Abdelatty received from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The two discussed developments in the occupied Palestinian territories and international efforts to support deescalation, consolidate the ceasefire in Gaza and achieve calm in the West Bank, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tamim Khalaf.
Abdelatty also reiterated Egypt’s unequivocal rejection of any proposals aimed at displacing Palestinians or altering the geographic or demographic status of the Gaza Strip.
The spokesperson said in a press statement that Abdelatty reviewed during the call the intensive efforts Egypt is undertaking to support security and stability in the region, foremost among them consolidating the ceasefire in Gaza.
He stressed the importance of adhering to U.N. Security Council Resolution 2803 and ensuring the unrestricted flow of humanitarian aid, while also addressing the ongoing consultations regarding the deployment of an international stabilization force.
He affirmed Egypt’s commitment to continuing coordination with regional and international partners to support the rights of the Palestinian people and enable them to exercise their right to self-determination and establish their independent state.
He warned of the dangerous situation in the West Bank amid the alarming rise in settler violence and the ongoing policies of land confiscation, stressing that such practices threaten to widen the cycle of tension and place an urgent responsibility on the international community to intervene immediately to halt these violations and prevent further deterioration on the ground.
