Egyptian Foreign Minister Bedr Abdulati said the U.S.-mediated framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel should serve as the basis for a process leading to Israel's full withdrawal from Lebanese territory, Egypt's Foreign Ministry said.
Abdulati made the remarks during a phone call on Friday with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, according to a statement from the ministry.
During the call, Salam briefed Abdulati on the details of the framework agreement reached with Israel as part of efforts to end military tensions in Lebanon.
Abdulati described the agreement as "an important beginning" and stressed the need for Israel to gradually withdraw from areas it still occupies.
Abdulati said Israel's withdrawal from occupied areas would allow the Lebanese army to deploy across the country and enable state authority to be restored over all Lebanese territory.
He said the development should pave the way for Israel's full withdrawal from Lebanon and the complete and nondiscriminatory implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701.
Abdulati also reiterated Egypt's full support for the Lebanese government and its policies aimed at establishing sovereignty across the country, deploying the army in all regions and bringing weapons under state authority.
Salam expressed appreciation for Egypt's support and praised Cairo's consistent supportive position toward the Lebanese state and its institutions.
The Lebanese prime minister also stressed the importance of maintaining coordination and consultation mechanisms between the two countries.
