Erdogan told Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev in a phone call on Wednesday that Ankara is determined to deepen relations with Sofia, particularly through trade, Türkiye’s Communications Directorate said.

The two leaders also discussed regional and global issues, according to a directorate statement. During the call, Erdogan expressed sorrow over a drone attack in Bulgaria’s Exclusive Economic Zone and conveyed his sympathies and best wishes.

He also invited Radev to the COP31 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for Nov. 11-12 in Antalya.

Push for closer bilateral cooperation

Erdogan stressed that Türkiye aims to take concrete steps to expand cooperation with Bulgaria, the statement said, with trade named as the main area of focus. The directorate did not give details of specific measures or targets.

Türkiye and Bulgaria are neighbors that share a land border, and both are NATO members.

Erdogan also pointed to Ankara’s efforts to ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea, which it pursues through continued contact with both Russia and Ukraine, according to the statement.

The Black Sea is bordered by Türkiye, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Russia and Georgia, and it is a key route for regional shipping.

Condolences over drone attack

The Turkish leader expressed sorrow over the drone attack in Bulgaria’s Exclusive Economic Zone, the statement said.

An Exclusive Economic Zone is a maritime area extending up to 200 nautical miles from a country’s coast, in which the coastal state holds rights over natural resources. The statement did not provide details of the attack.

Erdogan invited Radev to the COP31 Leaders’ Summit in Antalya on Nov. 11-12, the statement said. COP refers to the annual United Nations climate change conference, which brings together world leaders and negotiators.
