The European Union on Tuesday urged Israel to comply with its obligations under international law after Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for intensified strikes on Gaza and the killing of “30 to 40” Palestinians a day.
European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper said during a press briefing in Brussels that Israel was expected to respect international humanitarian law and ensure the protection of civilians.
“The EU expects Israel to comply with all its obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law,” Hipper said.
She added that civilians must be protected at all times.
Hipper also noted that a proposal to place Ben-Gvir on the EU’s sanctions list under its global human rights sanctions regime is currently before the Council.
“I would also like to recall that we have a proposal currently in the Council to include Ben-Gvir on the sanctions list under the global human rights sanctions regime,” she said.
Ben-Gvir, Israel’s far-right national security minister, recently called for increased airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and said Israel should kill “30 to 40” Palestinians each day.
He also renewed calls for Israelis to resettle in Gaza at the expense of the Palestinian population.
The European Commission’s response focused on Israel’s obligations under international law and the need to protect civilians.
