U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday there are no talks or scheduled conversations with Iran, while asserting that a U.S. naval blockade remains in force and the Strait of Hormuz is open.
Trump made the remarks in a post on his Truth Social account, saying all underwater mines in the strait had been removed or detonated.
"There are no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Naval Blockade remains in full force and effect. The Hormuz Strait is open and operating. All water mines have been removed or detonated," Trump wrote.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that the Strait of Hormuz is under U.S. control and has recently raised the possibility of making the strategic waterway U.S. territory.
Trump posted a map of the Strait of Hormuz on Truth Social Tuesday under the headline "NEW U.S. Territory." The highlighted area included parts of the coasts of Iran, Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The post followed Trump’s comments Monday, when he described declaring the strait U.S. territory as a "great idea." Asked what he meant, Trump said, "We control it," adding that the U.S. controls it "with the blockade."
Trump first floated the idea at an Aug. 14 event, saying that after defeating Iran, he would declare the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi called Trump’s territorial claim a "delusion."
"Soon his delusion regarding the Strait of Hormuz will either be corrected or we will correct the delusions of this deluded man," Gharibabadi wrote on X.
The Strait of Hormuz has become a focal point of the nearly six-month war between the United States and Iran. Both sides claim control over the strategic waterway, which is used by Gulf states to ship oil and gas from the Persian Gulf to global markets.
Iranian officials have repeatedly said the strait will not reopen until the U.S. ends its interference in the waterway and naval blockade and fulfills the requirements of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Tehran and Washington on June 18.
