European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday expressed the European Union’s full support for a Gaza ceasefire plan brokered by the United States, Qatar, Egypt and Türkiye.

“Europe fully supports the peace plan brokered by the United States, Qatar, Egypt and Türkiye. The finalization of the agreement ending the war today in Sharm el-Sheikh will be a historical milestone,” von der Leyen said on X.

She said the EU stands ready to help implement the plan “with all tools at our disposal,” including support for governance and reform of the Palestinian Authority.

“We will be an active force within the Palestinian Donors Group. And we will provide EU funding for the reconstruction of Gaza,” she added.

US plan enters first phase

The announcement came after U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of his 20-point ceasefire plan.

The proposal includes the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip. The first phase took effect on Friday.

Next step focuses on governance and disarmament

The second phase envisions forming a new governing body in Gaza that excludes Hamas, deploying a multinational force and overseeing the disarmament of Hamas.

Israeli attacks since October 2023 have killed over 67,800 Palestinians in Gaza, most of them women and children, leaving much of the territory in ruins.
