A fire broke out at a prison in the Hiliadu area of Volos following a fight among inmates, leaving four people hospitalized due to smoke inhalation, according to local media reports.
The incident occurred in the evening hours when a dispute between prisoners escalated. During the clash, mattresses were reportedly set on fire in one of the cells, producing heavy smoke that spread through the facility.
Three prison staff members and one inmate were taken to Volos General Hospital after suffering from smoke inhalation.
Their conditions were not life-threatening, authorities said.
Several inmates reportedly had difficulty breathing, with some calling for help as the smoke thickened.
Firefighters dispatched 13 personnel and four fire engines to the prison, managing to bring the blaze under control.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident and assess the extent of the damage.
