The number of students killed in a U.S.-Israeli attack targeting a girls primary school in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province has risen to 40, Iranian state media reported Saturday, after initial reports said five children had died.
Iran’s official news agency IRNA said a primary school was targeted in a U.S.-Israeli strike in the city of Minab. Early assessments initially put the death toll at five schoolgirls.
Iran state television later reported that at least 40 schoolgirls were killed in the attack on Shajarat al-Tayyiba Girls Primary School in Minab.
A local official identified as Radmehr had earlier said that a primary school in Minab was hit and that 24 schoolgirls were killed at that time. State media said the death toll later climbed as rescue and recovery efforts continued.
The attack came as Israel and the United States carried out joint strikes on Iran while negotiations between Tehran and Washington were ongoing.
Israel’s Defense Ministry said Israel launched a “preemptive strike” against Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States had begun a “major operation” against Iran.
As part of the attacks, Iranian media reported strikes on the capital, Tehran, as well as the cities of Isfahan, Karaj, Qom, Tabriz, Bushehr, Kermanshah and Ilam.
Israel and Iran closed their airspace as Israel declared a state of emergency and air raid sirens sounded across the country.
Before Iran’s counterattacks, Israeli authorities issued warnings directing the public to seek shelter.
Iran’s military said it launched retaliatory attacks against Israel using dozens of ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles in response to the U.S. and Israeli strikes.
Iran also said it targeted U.S. bases in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Jordan with missile attacks. Iranian media reported that the U.S. naval base in Bahrain was hit.
