Amjad Yasser al-Shawa, the nominee to head a proposed technocratic committee to administer the Gaza Strip, said Monday he is ready to assume the role if there is a broad national, Arab, and international consensus on his appointment, according to Arab media reports.
Al-Shawa stated that “the technocratic committee in Gaza requires national, Arab, and international consensus.”
Al-Shawa affirmed that the technocratic committee in Gaza must work in coordination with the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization, stressing that “the Gaza Strip is an integral part of the Palestinian territories.”
He noted that the technocratic committee in Gaza will play an important role in the economic and social recovery phase, which he described as “essential and significant,” adding that “providing urgent relief to Gaza’s residents and reopening the crossings are top priorities.”
In the context of reconstruction, al-Shawa emphasized that rebuilding Gaza is a heavy burden that the technocratic committee cannot bear alone.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority reported in October 2025 that Hamas and the Palestinian Authority had agreed to nominate al-Shawa to head the technocratic committee that will administer the Gaza Strip.
According to the authority, the approval came following meetings in Cairo with Egyptian intelligence, while final confirmation of the appointment remains pending a U.S. decision.
Amjad Yasser al-Shawa — born in Gaza in 1971 — is a Palestinian activist who has served as head of the Palestinian NGOs Network in the Gaza Strip since 1999.
He joined the Board of Commissioners of the Independent Commission for Human Rights in 2018.
He believes that the Palestinian cause is fundamentally political, calling for resistance to the occupation through popular means and the establishment of a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital.
Israeli sources described al-Shawa as “not being formally affiliated with any party,” noting that he has maintained a balanced relationship with the various political factions in Gaza.
Palestinian factions and political forces announced that they had agreed, during a meeting held in Cairo, to hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to a temporary committee of technocrats from the enclave, according to a joint statement issued by the factions on Oct. 24, 2025.
