German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil on Tuesday called on the European Union to seriously consider sanctions against Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over remarks advocating the killing of dozens of Palestinians in Gaza each day.

In an interview with broadcaster Sat.1, Klingbeil described Ben-Gvir’s comments as “inhumane” and said they should carry serious consequences, according to Der Spiegel.

Klingbeil said he stood in solidarity with Israel but not with “such ministers.”

Ben-Gvir called for killing ‘30 to 40’ Palestinians a day

Ben-Gvir recently called for intensified Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and said Israel should kill “30 to 40” Palestinians each day.

He also renewed calls for Israelis to resettle in Gaza at the expense of the Palestinian population.

Klingbeil said the EU should seriously consider imposing sanctions on the Israeli minister over the remarks.

German Greens call for entry ban

Franziska Brantner, co-leader of Germany’s Green Party, separately called for an entry ban on Ben-Gvir.

“I urge the German government to impose an entry ban on this man and to advocate for similar sanctions to be imposed at the European level,” Brantner told Politico.

Her remarks added to growing calls among German politicians for measures against Ben-Gvir.

CDU/CSU lawmaker also backs EU sanctions

Jurgen Hardt, foreign policy spokesperson for the Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union parliamentary group, also called Monday for the EU to sanction Ben-Gvir.

Hardt cited the Israeli minister’s remarks advocating the killing of dozens of Palestinians in Gaza every night.

The calls from Klingbeil, Brantner and Hardt place pressure on the EU to consider action against Ben-Gvir over his statements on Gaza.
