Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday that Germany provided Ukraine with a new support package worth more than €1.3 billion ($1.46 billion) following talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Kyiv.
In a statement on U.S. social media company X, Zelenskyy said the package includes weapons as well as support for Ukraine’s energy sector ahead of winter.
“It includes weapons that will help us now, as well as support for our energy sector ahead of winter – an important energy package. Of course, we discussed the need for air defense, which is critical at this time,” Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine and Germany had signed 15 agreements and documents, most of them covering security cooperation, defense production, procurement, orders for German industry and joint projects in Ukraine.
“The total value of our agreements today is more than €8.5 billion,” he said.
A separate agreement was also signed to expand cooperation between the two countries on joint efforts to counter drones.
Zelenskyy described his meeting with Merz as “very productive” and thanked Germany and Europe for supporting Ukraine.
Merz arrived in the Ukrainian capital Sunday morning for an unannounced visit.
“You can rely on us,” Merz said, describing the message he brought to Kyiv.
