Greek tax authorities have launched a series of investigations targeting foreign property owners in Asprovalta, a popular tourist destination in Northern Greece.

The move follows complaints from local accommodation providers who allege that foreign nationals, particularly from Balkan countries, are renting out properties without declaring rental income, thereby evading taxes and creating unfair competition.

Locals complain of unfair competition as authorities act

According to a report by state-run ERT television, local property owners in Asprovalta have expressed concerns over a significant drop in bookings. They attribute this decline to foreign property owners renting out accommodations to fellow nationals without adhering to Greek tax regulations.

These properties are often advertised through various platforms, including Facebook groups, without proper registration or tax declarations.

Fines up to €5,000: Investigations of holiday rentals

In response to the allegations, Greek authorities have stepped up inspections across Northern Greece as part of a wider effort to tackle long standing tax evasion in the tourism industry.

Violations can result in fines starting at €5,000, with penalties doubling for subsequent offenses.
