A lawmaker from Greece’s main opposition party has submitted an oral parliamentary question over claims that Israel supported the ruling party ahead of the 2023 general election.

Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) MP Olga Gerovasili said the move followed reports in the Israeli press alleging support for the ruling New Democracy.

Haaretz report cited

In a written statement, Gerovasili pointed to reports published by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, saying the paper made serious claims regarding New Democracy’s success in the 2023 election.

She called on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to publicly address the allegations.

Allegations linked to Israeli presidency aide

Gerovasili recalled claims that an aide to Israeli President Isaac Herzog supported efforts to shape online public opinion in Greece in favor of New Democracy ahead of the vote.

According to Israeli media reports cited by Gerovasili, the alleged cooperation dates back to late 2022, a period when Greece’s wiretapping scandal was dominating the political agenda.

Question focuses on online influence claims

In her oral question, Gerovasili asked whether New Democracy cooperated with a close associate of the Israeli president to steer online public opinion both before the 2023 general election and after the wiretapping scandal.

She requested that Mitsotakis clarify whether such cooperation took place, referring specifically to the claims reported in Israeli media.
