Iran announced Tuesday it has established a new cooperation framework with the International Atomic Energy Agency, marking a potential breakthrough after Tehran suspended collaboration with the UN nuclear watchdog following attacks by Israel and the United States in June.

The agreement emerged from talks in Cairo between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, signaling a possible thaw in relations that had deteriorated amid escalating regional tensions.

Cairo talks yield new understanding between Tehran and IAEA

"Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency have reached an understanding on how to engage under the new circumstances," Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei told state television following the high-level meeting.

The development comes after Iran halted its cooperation with the Vienna-based agency in response to what it characterized as coordinated strikes by Israeli and American forces earlier this year. The suspension had raised international concerns about oversight of Iran's nuclear program at a time of heightened Middle East tensions.

The IAEA serves as the primary international body monitoring Iran's nuclear activities under various agreements and UN Security Council resolutions. Iran's cooperation with the agency has been a key metric for assessing compliance with international nuclear oversight requirements.

Details of the new cooperation framework were not immediately disclosed, and it remains unclear whether the agreement addresses the specific issues that led to the suspension of cooperation in June.
