Iran has named former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, replacing Ali Larijani, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike last week, state media reported Tuesday.
"With the approval of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and by order of Masoud Pezeshkian, Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr replaced the martyred Ali Larijani in the Supreme National Security Council," Iran's state broadcaster IRIB said in a statement.
The appointment was also confirmed by the IRNA news agency, citing the president's office.
Zolghadr reached the rank of brigadier general in the IRGC and had been serving as the secretary of Iran's Expediency Council prior to his appointment.
